AnyoneButHarper.ca: Vote to Win

  • Robert M. David · 1 year ago
Why not organize a large, non-partisan event in the last week of the campaign in Ottawa and Quebec City, where different speakers would try to convince voters to vote other than Conservative generally, and strategically in these swing ridings?

Such speakers could not be simply leftists, but include "moderate" conservatives and religious leaders, farmers, police chiefs (e.g. the head of the Montreal Police Brotherhood just came out against voting Conservite yesterday), workers and business owners affected by the decline of the manufacturing and forestry sectors, economists against neo-conservative economic policies, as well as artists, women, youth and other representatives. Ideally, similar rallies would take place also in each province, but at least have these two, broadcasted on all news chanels and the Internet.

so basically the idea is to promote a minority, so that our government can be useless and achieve nothing? If you hate Harper so much then suggest who is better to lead the country and then support them. It is absolutely ludicrous to support the idea of a minority government
  • neil · 1 year ago
minority governments, if they work by co-operating (as harper has not done) can achieve a lot.

our healthcare system and old age pension were introduced by a minority government.
  • Sam · 1 year ago
Pls this get the facts straight. It is the Opposition parties who threatened to take down the gov't (and then chicken out) at almost every turn. Who's not co-operating?
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Which were brilliant plans that got passed because no one could debate against them without committing career suicide.

Yes I know. Harper is evil and will destroy Canada. Gotcha.
  • Dave · 1 year ago
Lester Pearson presided over a minority government which which is universally recognised as the most productive in Canadian history and was the beginning of modern Canada. He did it because he knew hoe to work with the opposition for the good of the country.

Stephen Harper can do the same if he really wants to, but he choses otherwise for reasons of political gain. Canadians should not be blackmailed into giving him a majority, he works for us, and if he can't do the job with the mandate WE give him then the only honourable thing for him to do is stand aside for someone who can.
  • Eric · 1 year ago
the idiots who vote conservitive should realise they are voting in a canadian alliance cocus its an unjust tactic used by harper to gain power it would be no diffrent then the ndp joining the liberals and claiming being libreals yet keeping an ndp adgenda since they never had a chance in the history of the party, harper and the rest of the canadian alliance and ridding the PC party to push there own neo-conservative adgenda, Canada as its been since the birth will be lost forever
  • Mark Crawford · 1 year ago
Idisagree! In the first place, there is a respectable view that Harper is acceptable, but only so long as he is on a short leash, given his ideological, centralizing, arrogant, controlling and vindictive ways. IN the second place, it can be argued that several of our best governments have been minority governments--e.g. those of Pearson and Trudeau.
  • Mark Crawford · 1 year ago
P.S. If Harper really deserves a majority government, shouldn't he be campaigning for one? He is laying so low, the CONSERVATIVES HAVE NOT EVEN RELEASED A POLICY PLATFORM. THe most telling moment of the campaign was when Harper made his red-meat comment about reducing arts funding, AND THEN REFUSED TO REPEAT HIS COMMENT IN FRENCH. THis is a cynical and devious campaign, and if it works, politicians everywhere will be encouraged to follow these tactics, starting with negative personal attack ads, which started months before the writ was dropped, followed by flouting the spirit of his 'fixed election dates' law, only a year after it was passed.....
  • Jaya · 1 year ago
Do you know anything about the functions that minority governments serve? Is it not the case that an elected government is to attempt to best serve the population of all the people in its country? Does this not mean that there are many voices to be heard and subsequently, wouldn't streamlining these voices into one majority unfairly represent the public's collective (any yes, sometimes varied) opinions? Look to European models of government and you will find many examples of minority governing systems that work: they are fair, equalised, representative and productive. Canada has a WEAKNESS in that we have two few parties and too few candidates put forth to represent the visions and objectives of its people. In recent years the government has acted more like a dictatorship, ignoring the most popular national concerns including environmental policy, and instead remaining fixated on economic policy regardless of their minority status. Need I say more than "Fort McMurray"?
  • Jane · 1 year ago
Jaya makes excellent sense about the benefits of minority governments, but perhaps doesn't realise that most European minority governments come from proportional representation. We don't have that in Canada. We have the ridiculous 'first one past the post' system. This means the first person in each riding to achieve more votes than any other candidate (even if that number is smaller than any of the others combined) will 'win' the riding. As a result, we had a Conservative party minority government because none of the other candidates received as many votes. With proportional representation, each party will be represented in government by the percentage of votes they achieved. This is a much fairer system and far more representative of the views of the electorate and the real support each gained.

It takes a special kind of leader to work well with a minority governement - as was Lester B. Pearson - but Mr Harper is a controlling autocrat who refuses to work effectively in the interests of Canadians, even within his own party.
  • paul · 1 year ago
Better to achieve nothing than to achieve a total sellout of everything Canadian to the highest bidder. (Energy,Water,Freedom) - Public Ownership vs Corporate Ownership - If you vote for Harper again, prepare yourself to be owned.
  • lily · 1 year ago
what a ridiculous web site, how many here actually believe the scary hidden agenda of the conservatives that has never materialized....too much lmao.
  • Magoo · 1 year ago
I do. and if you don't beleive that the conservatives have a scary hidden agenda, then you are one of thousands of Canadians snowballed by the lack of press and seem to be quite happy to live in the false-economics of Oz rather then pull the curtain back and see the truth behind your charlatan wizard.
That makes you a very irresponsible voter and Canadian.
  • lily · 1 year ago
Well we might just get a minority Liberal government,i wonder how Canada will be percieved globally then when the next prime minister of canada is a small nerdy looking little man that appears about to burst into tears when frustrated or angry, understandably as he cant even speak the official language of this country. Ah yes proud to be Canadian with such a powerful eloquent, charasmatic leader at the helm.
  • marc · 1 year ago
Lily, you do realize French is an official language of Canada? Dion does speak French quite well.
  • Brian · 1 year ago
The consevatives have abandoned the high road and are pandering to the fears of people who live from paycheck to paycheck at the expense of truly debating the issues that ought to be world and national priorities such as putting a price on pollution. By concentrating on the carbon tax as a bad thing that might occur to people Harper has ursurped the debate closing it off before we the people can weigh the true pros and cons of a plan to fundamentally assess the costs of us using cheap sources of energy which in the long run may be expensive to other parts of our lives or our children's.
  • Sam · 1 year ago
It IS a bad idea in the current economic climate. And let's not forget Jack Layton is just as vehemently against the carbon tax. Quit being so selective in choosing who to blame!
  • Sam · 1 year ago
Quote: "A non-partisan movement voting to win against Stephen Harper." What an oxymoron! No one can claim to be "non-partisan" when one is deliberately voting against one party - namely, the Conservative Party.
  • Pete · 1 year ago
Steven Harper is another clone of George Bush and we can not allow him to ruin this great country that we call home. He is giving corp. cuts to big business and leaving the individual citizens with either a small or zero cut of the pie. I truly believe that what this website represents should become reality on Oct 14/2008 which anyone but Harper will prevail. So, Go Go Go Liberals or NDP....................
  • Nina · 1 year ago
complainng about cuts to culture when in fact they have risen by 8% under the conservatives, what is a a paintbrush going to do when the russians are attacking our land and natural resources from the north, what is dions position on that because i havent heard it, maybe i will during the debate, no way no how would there have been a 2% GST cut under any of the other leaders, how soon we forget!!! how can people think harper is the mini me for bush, i mean, yes Canada strong and free, but we need america, we need to have a good working relationship with the american government, not to be followers or copy them but to benefit our own policies and developments within our own country!!!! if anyone but the conservatives win it will be a tragedy!!!
  • Jeff · 1 year ago
How soon we forget indeed. Was it not the Conservatives that gave us the G.S.T. to begin with.
  • dze thing · 1 year ago
Hey Nina!,… I have to admit that the perspective of the other candidates is not to exiting. But !, the fact is that HARPER's way is so undemocratic, I would even say totalitarian, that this country is not willing to let go of it' well deserved freedom of expression nor it's democracy. He might be a good speaker, but his actions show a lot of contradictions. In other words, Harper is a master manipulator with no integrity. We have seen corruptions in our politics before, but this one will step on cadavers to get to his goal. Personally I would like to keep good relations with the US, but when you’re good nabor declare WARs all over the Globe, you have to wonder when your turn will come. Politic has become a very dirty business since Globalization. It is not easy to choose between all evils. One thing I am sure of, is that Harper is the most dangerous one. I 'd rather have an incompetent than a Dictator.
  • FOR MORE ON HARPER CLICK HERE · 1 year ago
Yes I am really happy for my GST cut too. Why, just the other day, I paid 100 dollars for something -- AND I PAID TWO WHOLE DOLLARS IN TAX LESS THAN I WOULD HAVE UNDER ANOTHER GOVT!

Wait, on the other hand, if there are a million purchases of 100 dollars every year in Canada (let's say), then hasn't the government foregone 2 million dollars in revenues per YEAR with this cut???

Mmmm, yes, I must remember to trust Harper on the economy this Oct 14... he obviously knows what he's doing...

oh, IIII get it, the GST cut only helps in any real way those people and businesses who can afford to make lots of large purchases per year in the first place! Doesn't help those lower down the chain -- groceries are already GST free, for example, and rent is not a Good or Service anyway...

But that's ok Mr Bush, ahem, Harper, if the rich get richer it'll trickle down to us right?

This after all must be why your govt craps on Ontario, you know THAT PLACE WHERE YOU NEED VOTES FOR YOUR MAJORITY, suffering as it is under all the loss of jobs, that your policies have produced, to 3rd world sweat shops (cough cough labour laws, cough human rights),

...and you crap on them for daring to tax companies at a decent rate --

-- (but wasn't the corporate tax rate in the UK when I lived there 20% ? ; and isn't the UK **NOT** 2ND TO BOTTOM IN THE G7 IN TERMS OF GDP ... oh yes that's us...)

BTW, what sort of bizarre worldview relies on wealth generation for normal people through a circuitous trickling-down (as long as foreign business doesn't pull out to go elsewhere of course, which it can at any moment in a neo-con world -- talk about "financial dependency" Mr Klein!!!), WHEN SIMPLY TAXING THEM AT RATES SIMILAR TO THE UK WOULD PUT THE MONEY DIRECTLY IN PUBLIC COFFERS???

In any case, anyone reading this, and anyone really interested in understanding Stephen Harper and his Canadian Alliance Party (yes, that's what I said!), should do a Google search for "Stephen Harper" and "Leo Strauss" -- go do it now...

... you won't just be voting strategically, you'll be storming parliament...
  • I · 1 year ago
Your comments about Ontario and its situation are respectable. Yet you fail to realize that is McGuinty from the Liberal party that has sunk Ontario with its pointless policies of attempted energy reform and other terrible policies.

Have any of you seen the American Political Debate the other night? In listening to their foreign policies it is imminent that there will be a war in the United States within the next couple of years. They are determine to bomb Iran because they are now saying that Iran is gaining too muc power. How many people remember when USA went to war in Irag and the Conservatives (Namely Stephen Harper) if he was the PM would have entered Canada in a War. By giving a majority to the Conversatives this becomes a reality. Many of you don't think that he has a hidden agenda. If you are interested go to the Walrus Magazine site and look up an article published in October 1995 about the "Who is Behind Stephen Harper". It's a real eye opener. After reading this article ask yourselves one more time - DOES STEPHEN HARPER HAVE A HIDDEN AGENDA????
  • Mélanie · 1 year ago
WATCH OUT ! A majority government for Harper, joined with the election of McCain in the States = DISASTER.
We are better vote strategically in both countries if we don't want to end up being ruled by governments like the Bush Republicans. What happens in Canada will have a huge effect on what will happen in the world, wether we are talking about WARS, TERRORISM, ECONOMY or ENVIRONMENT. Those people work together, and they have one goal : get MORE POWER, by joining the efforts of their countries, MAKE MORE $ , at any cost for the environment and the population's well being (Drill, baby, drill ! says McCain in his campain) and USE THE BILLIONS OF $ from the royalties the Petroleum Cies give them to FEED THEIR WARS and their CAMPAINS, in order to gain MORE POWER ! Well, believe me, they join efforts strategically and if we don't do the same, say goodbye to DEMOCRACY ! And be sure that right here at home we will live the effects of that every day of our lives.
  • Brent · 1 year ago
I honestly believe that Harper is Canada's little dictator. I see the death of all that is good in Canada if he gets a majority after this election. Vote for anyone BUT Harper!!!!!
  • Monique · 1 year ago
I want to thank those that started this web page. Unfortunately it is not advertised enough so that Canadians can come and read what Stephen Harper has been doing the last few years that he has been in Ottawa. The way to describe Stephen Harper is this: "There are rules and regulations for everyone and then there are rules and regulations for Stephen Harper" It is unbelievable what this man has done and gotten away with and we Canadians seem to have our heads in the sand and keep telling ourselves that everything is going to be ok. Well things are not going to be ok.

I would like to invite the Seniors or Canada to read about Stephen Harper and to those who think that they are safe from Stephen Harper and his agenda, think again. Seniors feel that they are already getting their pensions and whatnot and nothing can change that. HAS ANYONE THOUGHT ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY THAT STEPHEN HARPER DECIDES THAT SENIORS DO NOT NEED THE PENSION? If the country goes to war which is what Stephen Harper wants to do, they I'm sure that Stephen Harper wouldn't blink an eye in putting all monies towards fighting these so called terrorists and if it means to cut back the OAS then so be it. SENIORS UNITE AND PROTECT YOUR LIVELYHOOD.
  • Nina · 1 year ago
Jeff, i see your point but the GST replaced the MST which came in effect in 1924, under liberal rule of William Lyon MacKenzie. I still say NO ONE BUT HARPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Dze Thing · 1 year ago
Voting Conservative, is being a TRATOR to Democracy & to your own Country. Harper's Plans are so scary, that is why he did not prepare an electoral platform. His game is to keep a low profile until he gain Majority. THEN...
If he wins, there will be no Opposition Party to Stop his decisions, his dictatorship. PEOPLE, do You know what that means? You have seen the ravage of Bush policies in USA; well wait till you see this one! He comes from the same mould, and he is even more dangerous and deviant, because he is a true fanatic crusader. Convert or Perish!... This is the guy that claimed transparency in Government affairs, than forbid all his party to speak to Media without consulting him. What a Democracy! It’s also a real Joke to hear him proning his Family values, after we saw him picking up his son at school, no affectuous demonstration but just shaking hands with his 6 years old kid. No i am sorry, but this is not very fatherly. This guy is a FRAUD, and everything he stand for, is very well hidden for now. Imagine, 14 years old will take LIFE Prison sentence for serious crime. Then what? 12 than 10 years old?. But more strangely, he has no plan to abolish Firearms. A man or a kid has the right to carry a GUN but not use it ? Come on, this is the most absolute derange person that ever governed us. He doesn’t care about Canadians, don’t care about democracy, about environment and even less about this planet. His goal is not the well being of this country or society, He is the product and member of the LORDs of the new WORLD ORDER representative, disguised as Mister Ordinary Man. IF you love your country and want the best for the future of your children, DON'T LET THIS MAN GET REELECTED, or at least, I implore you, do not let him gain Majority.

Anonymous unregistered comments will be held for moderation and we cannot guarantee how quickly they will be approved. We encourage all of our users to get a Disqus account and use a photo as an avatar. I THINK YOU'VE GOT SOME PROBLEMS WITH YOUR WIDGET.
Apparently, I'm supposed to vote for Paddy Torsney of the New Conservatives in Burlington, Liberal Frank Valeriote in Guelph and "ANY PARTY This is not a swing riding" in Peterborough.
    Have you been hacked?
Check your brake lines!!!! Issue a press release.

    hey concerned,

can you please give us the postal code of that riding you inputted and we'll look into it.
  • Captain Carrot · 1 year ago
Get that widget more visible. It should be the most prominent thing people see when they get on the page. You want it easy for people to find out who to vote for on election day. Especially when you (hopefully) get lots of traffic around then.
  • Mark Kuznicki · 1 year ago
Check out the new homepage! Ask and ye shall receive.

We found the same problem as "CONCERNED" with your assessment of the Oakville, ON riding. You directed us to vote for any party when in fact the liberals are close behind the conservatives and need all the support they can get! You should direct people to vote for the candidate who has the best chance of beating the conservatives even if the margin is wide. You need to change your system ASAP. Please follow the protocol of voteforenvironment.ca!

    Please fix this!

In Guelph your suggestion is ridiculous. You suggest to vote Liberal, and you back that up with polling data that doesn't even show the green party. In fact, if you or anyone have been here in Guelph during the campaigns, you would notice that it is a two way battle between the Liberals and the GREENS. In the last week of the by-election (just before the general election was called), the polling results were: Libs 36%, Greens 24%, Cons 12%, NDP 8%. That was before the thousands of university students returned, and around 80% of them will vote green, and most recently the local paper endorsing Mike Nagy, the green candidate.
    http://news.guelphmercury.com/News/BreakingNews...

The Cons are nowhere near sight of the finish line and you are helping stymie a great chance for the greens to elect their first MP. Please update your Guelph results to reflect this.

The 'pundits' seem to think any riding in Alberta is going to vote Conservative, so do as you wish, while in the Edmonton Strathcona riding, Linda Duncan could easily beat Jaffer if she had folks voting strategically. In Edmonton Sherwood Park, there are two 'conservative' candidates running (one approved, one claiming to be independent, but would cross the floor to the conservatives if he wins). This will split the conservative vote between the two and give another party the chance to gain the riding. Yet...we aren't given polls, so we have no idea which candidate has the best chance of winning while the conservatives carry on with their infighting. Wh

I don't want to compare the prime minister of Canada to the former U.S. president, George Bush.. but their do seem to be some similiarities. I hope that the people will vote in a more liberal government.

Thanks for the great post with the video, it is definitely very important to vote strategically and get the right people in the Govt. - with crisis hitting us so badly we need an effective Govt to make things easier than what seems like..
