This seems like a good time to mention the failings of our "first past the post" electoral system - maybe http://fairvotecanada.org/ could use some support?
  • Paulo · 1 year ago
I would normally vote conservative, but we have too much to risk with another 4 years of a Harper govt.
The conservatives won because Canadians wanted to punish the liberals for the scandals, which they did.
In these times, we need to distance ourselves from the US and its policies/Bush style economy... sorry harper, but i can't give you my vote this time around

Btw, NO to the 'Amero' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_currency_...
n let's get Elizabeth May in, and Peter McKay out !
  • Blair · 1 year ago
    Oh - one more comment:

Here's what our good ol' Prime Minister said yesterday:

"You know, I think when ordinary, working people come home, turn on the TV and see … a bunch of people at a rich gala all subsidized by the taxpayers, claiming their subsidies aren't high enough when they know the subsidies have actually gone up, I'm not sure that's something that resonates with ordinary people."

    Here's something to consider:

The National Arts Centre is thrilled to announce that the legendary Tony Bennett, famously described by Frank Sinatra as “the best singer in the business”, will be the special guest at the next NAC Gala on Saturday, October 4. Tony Bennett and his quartet will give a one-hour command performance in the second half of the Gala. And, to launch this night of glamour and style, Pinchas Zukerman will lead the NAC Orchestra in a complementary classical programme. One evening with twice the enchantment – guaranteed to make you leave your heart at the NAC!

The NAC Gala is a benefit for the National Youth and Education Trust, investing in young Canadians through the performing arts. The NAC is delighted to announce that Janet Yale, TELUS’ executive vice president, Corporate Affairs, has agreed to chair the Gala Committee for a third year, and that *Mrs. LAUREEN HARPER will be the Gala’s Honourary Chair.*

    Oh dear.

May has a much better chance against MacKay, that much is obvious. London Centre she came in a strong second to the Liberal, and she'll either be first or second in Central Nova.

Hi all. Please look at the following site. It's the best way to neutralize Harper:

    http://www.voteforenvironment.ca/

    Thanks!
  • David · 1 year ago
    Dear Dhruv
Obviously the site is biased against Mr Harper and the Conservatives;that is hardly surprising. But agree or not, it is manifestly not a "stupid" site or idea; in fact it's damned clever, if only in illustrating how the political parties have failed to create a reasonable coalition of forces in opposition to the Conservatives. You would've loved it back when Reform and the PCs split the conservative vote. But more important, it isn't "disgusting" either and such language really just diminishes you and your apparent cause. Show some respect, and if you believe that opponents haven't shown enough respect for Mr Harper, then show some class and be better than they are. You can do it!
  • Paula · 1 year ago
Yeah... let's add up the candidates here. We've got our current PM who has done a stellar job in the face of partisan opposition, Lie-berals who love to tax us and spend like mad, the Bloq who don't represent the country at all and the NDP whose leader has been filmed supporting illegal drug use!

Anyone notice who's got our sovereignty in mind? Notice the Russians and the US circling like vultures around our north? That would be Harper shoring up the troops there. I don't think the Lie-berals even noticed we had a north!

Oh yes, and this insanity about this site being non-partisan? Not so. Partisan is defined as :A fervent, sometimes militant supporter or proponent of a party, cause, faction, person, or idea." That describes this site and most of the nut bars here.
  • Mark Kuznicki · 1 year ago
Paula, this site is non-partisan in the sense that we don't align with any particular party but are united in opposition against the Harper regime. It is NOT non-ideological, but the ideology we share is broadly "progressive", perhaps "neo-progressive", and could as easily include disenchanted Progressive Conservatives together with Greens, Liberals, NDPers and Bloc supporters. Or the vast majority of Canadians who share progressive values who do not identify with any of the current established parties.
  • Stephen K · 1 year ago
Somehow, I don't think Paula knows the meaning of the word progressive.
  • adam king / sabbatical™ · 1 year ago
Strange that for Central Nova this site recommends voting NDP. You really think Lorifice has a better chance than Elizabeth May? Very optimistic. Makes me wonder what methodology this site is using to determine it's recommendations...

Memorize the words to this song and sing it to your neighbours, your friends, your family, the postwoman, the bus driver, the coffee guy! Better yet, memorize the words to this song, videotape yourself in your region. Heck! Make a choir! Create a symphony! Just get it on tape and upload it to the anyonebutharper Youtube Channel. And we will post it here, too!

Thanks Justine, Annie and Mr. Baritone for the awesome lyrics!

    Firstly,
I love the website. I want to vote Harper OUT of the PM's office for his incompetence in dealing with such a wide variety of issues. However I have a serious moral Quandry with this website that really put me in a pickle.

I am currently living in Laurie-Saite Marie district of Montreal, Gilles Duceppe's Riding. Now according to the vote calculator I should be voting for the Bloc. Now, I checked out their plan and they have some interesting things to say on certain topics, but I cannot personally ever vote for a party that has a central platform of attempting to separate from Canada!

My personal belief is that the only place for Quebec is right here in Canada. Separation would be disastrous for both sides, especially Quebec, and the Bloc hasn't quite figured that out. Even after 2 Referendum's they still will not put the issue to rest, and Steven Harper is giving them even more reason to fight because he seems willing to bendover doggy for them in order to try to appeal to Quebec sympathies in order to try to get at their votes in Quebec.Even going so far as to give them special 'nation' status within our nation was a step in a very dangerous direction. Either way, I WONT VOTE BLOC.

So, I do hope that others in other more contested ridings vote harper out. In my riding, as Duceppe is already the clear favorite, I won't be voting for him. Although I am going against the idea put forward by this website, I support the idea fully and I hope sincerely that everyone else will vote together to get this SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS MAN OUT OF THE PRIME MINISTERS OFFICE... this election is so serious. Let's get someone else!
  • Mark Kuznicki · 1 year ago
Quandry, I encourage you and others in your situation to check out the Vote Swap Facebook group on http://anyonebutharper.ca/vote/. You might be able to swap votes with someone in Quebec who wants to vote Bloc in a riding where the Liberal is the stronger non-Conservative choice.

Much of what our electoral system and centre-left vote splitting have wrought sucks. In many cases, we just have to hold our noses and vote the lesser of evils in a strategic manner. Other than separation, the Bloc shares many policy positions and values with much of the progressive movement outside Quebec. I personally wouldn't interpret a vote for the Bloc as a vote for separation. That's what referenda are for!
  • Not in a Quandry · 1 year ago
    Hi Quandry,

I'm a Liberal, through and through but want to explain to you that at this time a vote for the Bloc is NOT a vote for separation. That would be a vote for the PQ -- and them I would NEVER vote for. A Bloc vote at this point is only a strategy. I hope you will try and understand this and do what is right.

There is no way Canada can vote for a conservative after what Bush did to the American economy, Harper will do to Canada given another chance. Harper is only for big oil and Alberta, Ontario has a depressed economy.
Harper has no intention on building on the new green economy and he is ultimately responsible for dragging us into the war and for not protecting us against tainted deadly products from China? How many reasons do you need?

Why hasn't the CBC (or anyone else) mentioned the secret Conservative plan to give the Canadian Military 490 Billion dollars?

On June 20, 2008 there was an article that mentioned the Conservative plan to give 490 BILLION dollars to the Canadian army. The bill was released quietly on the last day of parliament before the summer break. The CBC mentioned it on their web site in June but has not discussed it at all during the campaign. This is the news link:

    http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/06/20/milit...

There has also been scant reporting by the CBC on the Billions of dollars the Conservative promised to give Canadians in the weeks leading up to the election. Yet the CBC has spent quite a bit of time challenging and criticizing the Liberal plans to help Canadians.

The reason why the Green Shift is important is because it returns money to Canadians instead of just leaving it with corporations. Under the plan, Canadians will receive a refund from the Liberals instead of just giving their money away to oil companies who never return any money back to us.

Has anyone from the CBC/media actually gone to the Liberal's web site to test the Green Shift plan instead of just criticizing it?

Most economists have already stated that the Liberal plan is the best one for Canadians to deal with the real fact that everything is going up in price. The fact is that in order to help Canadians deal with the changes in our economy, taking taxes off from income and shifting over to "bad" products like oil is the best way to help reduce pollution, while giving money back to Canadians. The bonus is the rebate or refund that the average Canadian will receive.

It seems as though the CBC would rather talk about Stephen Harper's sweaters than how weak the Canadian economy is and the disastrous effects of Ethanol on food and energy prices.

I thought journalists were supposed to analyze and report the news, not be the news. If Stephen Harper wins a majority and puts forth his other agenda, Canada will definitely be the poorer for it.

There is a late breaking news story today about a Conservative candidate in Calgary who is blaming immigrants for crime. This is the link and title to the story:

Tory candidate blames immigrants for crime
    http://news.sympatico.msn.ca/abc/Election_08/Co...

It is also very bizarre how silent the media in Canada has been about the fact that MP Bernier was dating someone with ties to the Mafia and Mr. Harper's statements that it was a private matter, all the while trying to sell himself as a law and order leader.

How can a political leader "warn" Canadians about organized crime when his own MP was dating someone who was actually married to a criminal, whose organization is responsible for drug dealing, murders and a host of other crimes. Are Canadians and the media really buying this!?

A lot of time has been spent over the past 30 years or so mocking Americans because they supported Reagan, Bush I and Bush II and now it seems as though we are headed down that same sad, divisive road where Conservative/Republican political leaders who say they are tough on crime commit them (or help their friends commit them) and give money to corporations to the detriment of the ordinary people.

Stephen Harper wants to put 14 year olds in adult jails but does not want to explain how Maxime Bernier met Julie Couillard and why classified documents went missing for 5 weeks without anyone in his government asking questions. I guess it was just a coincidence that MP Bernier's portfolio was related to Afghanistan (one of the world's largest producers of opium) and he was dating someone who used to be married to a man who was part of an criminal gang that traffics illegal drugs.

Election Canada spending violations, supporting Mulroney's secret dealings and Maxime Bernier's questionable choices. Is this Stephen Harper's idea of being tough on crime? Is this the type of Prime Minister Canadians really want? Why isn't anyone in the media challenging the Conservatives on the very poor decisions they have made over the past 2 1/2 years?

    Howdy friends!

With less than 3 weeks left until the federal vote, I’d like to invite everyone to participate in a little electoral mischief.

The idea is to undermine Stephen Harper's control over his image through creative vandalism, to rebrand him through a grassroots, viral and distributed stickering campaign.

I’ve created various promo stickers combining Harper's blandly psychotic face with micro-slogans pitched somewhere between intrigue and mockery. ("Dinosaurs don't evolve" "Alberta Taliban" etc.) For variety there are a bunch of absurdist quotes - fake headlines well-suited to being slapped on newspaper vending boxes. Examples of both can be seen posted on my Facebook wall, or downloaded from the link at the end of this message.

Please join me! In hopes of reaching a critical mass, I've tried to make participating as easy as possible:

1.------------ “The people, divided, shall never be defeated!”

I’ve created a couple of Microsoft word files which can be downloaded from the link at the end of this message. Each file is formatted to print a batch of anti-Harper stickers onto standard 4” x 3 1/3" Avery inkjet labels (label ID# 05164). Both Office Depot and Staples stock Avery labels in this size, 100 sheets (600 labels per box) for around $35 (cheaper for a smaller number of sheets). If you have a computer and a printer, you’re in business.

While not weatherproof, the Avery labels stand up pretty well to rain, and their adhesive backing sticks to most surfaces. The sticker designs I've posted for download are black and white, both for economy, and because greyscale inkjet printing seems to smear less than colour when wet. The labels are partly perforated, but I find it easier to cut them up with scissors. I like to print about 10 sheets at a time, and slap them up on my way to work, or whenever I'm passing through a different neighborhood.

    2.-------------- "Crowd-sourcing Dissent"

I hope this action will be open-source as well as distributed, for those who want to participate more fully. To kickstart your own sloganeering, my original Photoshop files for sticker designs can also be downloaded and modified. Feel free to change the slogan, swap the picture, add colour, or whatever else you think might make for a punchy message.

When you’re done save a copy of the new sticker as a PICT or JPEG (rotated 90 degrees to fit the Avery label template) and drag-n-drop it into the Microsoft Word document to replace an old design. Then post your new version to this group for others to download and modify. I've created a new discussion board topic called "Sticker Virus" in the facebook group "Canadians United Against Steven Harper" for exchange of designs and other ideas. I suspect we can quickly evolve a sharp and potent message with enough participation.

    3.--------------- "Sloganistas unite!"

Please forward this message to anyone you think might be sympathetic. Everyone is welcome to join this action. I consider it a non-partisan effort motivated by a revulsion for Stephen Harper which transcends political affiliations. I suspect even one-time Reformers and Progressive Conservatives may share this feeling.

Unlike Harper, most people can't afford to buy airtime for TV ads. This is a way for ordinary folk to get their message out there for a very small cost. But it needs you to get involved. As one person, I doubt I can have much impact with 600 stickers. But there's over 10,000 people in this group. If only 1 person in 5 participates, that's 2000 folks stickering; 2000 x 600 doses of ridicule; 1.2 million cracks in Harper's smooth and brittle facade.

    Best Regards,
    --Jerry Boyle

My mailbox is starting to fill up with pro-Conservative flyers touting the money the Conservatives are saving by cutting perks in prisons so that prisoners are actually *punished*. They're well-written and I can understand how the message would resonate with the mythical Joe Sixpack who just wants to suck back cold ones in his Barcalounger after a long day turning pieces of scrap metal into smaller pieces of scrap metal.

But the costs saved by these prison reform initiatives are roughly equal to the costs saved by the cuts to arts & cultural funding.

So, since I'm *not* Joe Sixpack (and frankly don't think anyone should be) I'm left to presume that the Conservative government believes that prisoners' perks and art/cultural education occupy the same mental space. We are all chaff. We are all unproductive. We are all taxpayer parasites. None of us contribute.

I wish Mr. Harper and his administration had a single arts major among them to point out that there has never been a nation in the history of the planet to make a memorable impact on the history of this planet by failing to recognize the value of arts & culture. This ignorance isn't just governmental -- as artists, this is our responsibility. The early 21st century could be marked by the words, "Arts? Culture? Thanks for language, that gave us something useful. But now we have all the history we need, thanks. We only need roads and buildings now. Oh, and more oil if you have any."

We must begin a concerted effort to unit the left in this country by the next election. It is almost certain we are heading for another Harper government this time, but the bleeding of the left vote can stop if enough of a critical mass of people being to pressure the left to unite. Actually a weakened Liberal party now is a good thing for the movement to unite the left since they will be less arrogant and more apt to look at this possibility now. If the right could do it with their differences, surely the left can unite with the social spirit of the NDP and the centrist fiscal slant of the liberals. Let's call it the Liberal Democratic party or something like that. This will most surely quash the conservative moevement to form government for many many years to come!

Why not organize two large, non-partisan events in the last week of the campaign in Ottawa and Quebec City, where different speakers would try to convince voters to vote other than Conservative generally, and strategically in these swing ridings?

Such speakers could not be simply leftists, but include "moderate" conservatives and religious leaders, farmers, police chiefs (e.g. the head of the Montreal Police Brotherhood just came out against voting Conservite yesterday), workers and business owners affected by the decline of the manufacturing and forestry sectors, economists against neo-conservative economic policies, as well as artists, women, youth and other representatives. Ideally, similar rallies would take place also in each province, but at least have these two, broadcasted on all news chanels and the Internet.

1st step: organize a meeting (in person or via Internet or phone) to discuss, plan, share tasks if go ahead, etc.

has anyone here actually considered the results of a liberal "victory"? simple economics state that if there is a rise in costs for a company that they will raise their prices even more in order to over compensate for the rising production costs and pass said costs on to the consumer. therefore, no matter what dion does, if he brings in the "green shift", the average canadian worker is going to get the shaft. the rich will get richer, the poor will get poorer. this will only serve to weaken the country. i'd love to vote liberal but i cannot because i have to vote for a leader who has the best interest of the country in mind. mr. dion does not have the best interest of the country in mind.

  • Concerned · 1 year ago
Curious, is your personal solution to Dion, Harper? I understand the lack of stability within the Liberal party, but do you really believe that a full-tilt conservative government has "the best interest of the country in mind"? It's as though, for the first time in the history of Canada, we have the tools and examples to predict the fascist future of Canada if the Conservatives win, and, yet, no one wants to think about it or act on it. They only point fingers at other parties, when in reality, there is only one PM who will turn our country against us, and that is Harper and his Conservative REGIME. If we could've predicted the regimes of Stalin/Hitler/Bush, wouldn't we have stopped it? Why not this time?
  • acserrano · 1 year ago
    hey bob,

the issue is that Harper certainly does not have the best interest of the country in mind. Just finished reading the Mclean's article on his long-term vision of moving Canada further along the right of centre. And despite the fact that the article is not meant to vilify him in anyway, I couldn't help but be anxious by what Harper's vision represents. There's a piece of analysis on the Harper GST tax cut which I found particularly chilling.

Anyway, all this to say that I will vote for whomever will make sure Harper will not win this election. And call me crazy but it would be awesome if Harper neither won a minority or majority! To make this happen, I think you need to believe that Harper is on a completely different scale than any of the leaders of the other parties. Dion is not just Harper lite. He has a fundamentally different vision: one that actually contrary to what you think is interested in the long-term future of a Canada that is built on a history of shared (progressive) values among Canadians. Harper wants to change all that.
  • John Bessai · 1 year ago
Perhaps the most difficult thing about the current historical moment in Canada is that it seems like the country is sleepwalking towards an embrace of Harper - again - by default - looking for leadership. To be clear, Harper's essential philosophy is to let the same economic forces that Bush et. al are frantically bailing out south of the border continue to have the most possible influence over our economy in Canada. By supporting Harper it is literally like asking the fox to mind the chicken coup - Harper -the fox - keeps promising to guard the chickens yet still many people believe that, given the alternatives, this man and his government have the most credibility on the economy. In my view this understanding is quite clear - it means deregulation, weakening the public sector and destroying the welfare state - in other words removing the tools we need now and will need in the future to deal with the economy and climate change. Now is not the time to embrace outdated laissez-faire idealism -

Congrats on anyonebutharper.ca - lets spread the word. Vote for change, not Harper! Onwards.

Harper has his flaws, but certainly is better then Dion or Layton. Layton will bankrupt the country within 2 weeks with all his social programs while Dion's Green Shift is the worst idea since the Kyoto Protocol.

I'm not even sure why the Green's are being mentioned. I'll be shocked if they get one seat. Really, the greens would have much more power as a lobby group.

Stupid site and stupid idea. Non - ideological site? Common. To not elect Harper is to not vote Conservative, period. So, in essence its the left and the far left simply voicing their hate for Harper.

    Disgusting.

We have 4 parties in Canada.
    NDP left
    Liberals center left
    Green Party center right
    Conservatives right
    Look at the platforms.

We have more than 2 choices in this country. We should take advantage of theat
