AnyoneButHarper.ca: About

Why not organize two large, non-partisan events in the last week of the campaign in Ottawa and Quebec City, where different speakers would try to convince voters to vote other than Conservative generally, and strategically in these swing ridings?

Such speakers could not be simply leftists, but include "moderate" conservatives and religious leaders, farmers, police chiefs (e.g. the head of the Montreal Police Brotherhood just came out against voting Conservite yesterday), workers and business owners affected by the decline of the manufacturing and forestry sectors, economists against neo-conservative economic policies, as well as artists, women, youth and other representatives. Ideally, similar rallies would take place also in each province, but at least have these two, broadcasted on all news chanels and the Internet.

1st step: organize a meeting (in person or via Internet or phone) to discuss, plan, share tasks if go ahead, etc.

Robert, we could do two large events, or we could enable hundreds of neighbourhood events. I was thinking we could use Upcoming.org to help facilitate this. Check out the AnyoneButHarper group I just created on Upcoming and let me know what you think!!

    Hi,
why two groups of people (humans) think totally differently when talking about "common sense".
Ok this is will be a very mean commentary but here's the biological difference between radical liberal and radical conservatives. Science demonstrated it : http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-poli...

I found Jonathan Haidt's work even better: http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/jonathan_hai...
Also, a Yale study, though it's less impressive due to potential methodological problems: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dan-sweeney/there...

Hey Mark, in the CP24 interview you mention that 64% of Canadians are opposed to Harper; wondering if you had a citation for that, as I have not seen that data published anywhere else.

(Also, I think anyone expecting a Conservative majority after the last few days' polling numbers is bound for some disappointment; I expect that our House will look a lot like it did before this unnecessary election was called, with a slight change in the respective shape of the opposition seats such that we'll have more NDP and fewer Liberal MPs)

The quote should have been "the 64% of Canadians who support a party other than the Conservatives in the latest Gallup national daily tracking poll as of October 5th, 2008". Better?
  • beltzner · 1 year ago
Ah, quite, yes. Also that speaks better to the point you're trying to make here, I think, which is that if you consider the support for other parties to be condemnation of Harper, the "leading" polling numbers often reported for the Conservative Party of Canada can be seen quite differently.

    Thanks for the clarification, Mark!

I would like to begin by declaring a bias - I am a key organizer in the Liberal campaign in Elgin-Middlesex-London. I need to reiterate how close the battle is in my riding between the Conservative incumbant and the Liberal candidate. Our polls show us neck and neck. To reinforce that I am not strictly speaking from a partisan viewpoint, the Liberal candidate has received endorsements from the local CAW unions despite the NDP candidate being a CAW member. The Liberal in this riding has strong broad based local support and is in a battle to steal a seat from the Conservatives. Please re-evaluate your polls in this riding as strategic voting in Elgin-Middlesex-London could result in a another seat being taken from the Conservatives. A quick random poll will confirm that I am telling the truth.
